Digital transformation challenges us to question existing methods and practices and calls for innovativeness, effectiveness and organizational agility. Organizations need to tailor their solutions in order to meet the future challenges but not digitalize the technical solution but also look into human behavior and preferences.

CASE STUDY: Changing FX strategy

The ongoing ascent of trade tensions has been reflected in FX volatility and many corporates appear to have been caught out – given the profit warnings in the US and Europe. These were accompanied by a renewed commitment to allocate more resources to mitigating FX risk but suggested a fundamental flaw: in times of low volatility, companies allow hedge ratios to decline and when it returns they suddenly increase them. This reactive approach causes spikes in effectiveness and means that firms buy protection when it is most expensive. So is it time to raise those ratios again on an ad hoc basis? Or is it time for a better more holistic approach that goes beyond volatility? Treasurers still struggle to build the full picture of exposures needed to create and execute an appropriate hedging strategy. So how can currency exposures be analyzed, not just individual currency pairs, and create a complete view of risk? And how can technology and automation be used to build more systematic and less discretionary hedging programmes based on that picture?

Ramon Tolk, Senior Director Treasury, Avery Dennison

CASE STUDY: Digital Treasury Transformation in Metalor Technologies

Transformation may be an overused word, but the innovations coming from big data, AI and advanced analytics, mobile, cloud and automation, on top of the more prosaic improvements in payments infrastructure and bank connectivity represent the drivers of a treasury revolution. Only a treasury able to support businesses themselves by adopting new digital strategies will be fit for purpose. So what does a digital treasury look like? How can treasurers translate consultant-speak into a series of achievable, cost-effective objectives? Nicolas will explain what he means by digital transformation and what he has found is possible. He reveals how the department made the business case for change at a time when budgets were tight and how the resulting investments in key systems, along with strategic reviews of its in-house and SSC structures, really have made a significant difference.

Nicolas Carrera, Group Treasurer, Metalor Technologies
